A June 2020 AAMC report warns of a physician shortage of up to 139,000 physicians including up to 55,200 primary care physicians by 2033. Approach: TTUHSC is addressing access and the PC physician workforce through a 3-year curriculum that leads to the MD degree and has direct progression to FM residency programs in Amarillo, Lubbock, and Odessa. The FMAT program is now educating its tenth class of medical students. To date, 67 students have received the MD degree and 44 of them have completed residency. TTUHSC is also a member of a consortium of US schools developing 3-year pathways for debt reduction and earlier entry into the workforce. Presentation Objectives: 1) Describe the Family Medicine Accelerated Track; 2) Assess the impact of accelerated training on the PC physician workforce in Texas; and 3) Collaborate with physicians working to improve access through accelerated training.
